Here's the colored version! Done with Crayola and Prismacolor pencils.
Ecological bio:
These seafaring mammals live on green things like kelp and turtle grass, supplementing their diet with corals and other crunchy stuff to get their minerals. Thus, they need to stay reasonably close to shore to access these light-dependent organisms. However, they are migratory (moving from feeding to breeding grounds and vice versa), so during the yearly migrations they will make use of open ocean currents, stopping nightly for food and rest. Even so, they are practically starving when they arrive at their destination, and the first thing they do is bulk up on food. They will also flee to deeper water if assailed near shore, and vice versa if attacked in open water. If cornered, they can headbutt attackers with their horn-ridged heads or lash out with their forelimbs (all fins folded up, or "fisted").
Breeding season is hailed by a bit of a color change. Normally the horn ridges on the head are about the same color as the body (males) or mane (females); however, during breeding seasons the males' ridges become a bright pink (as shown), while the females sport a deep yellow-orange. Otherwise it is nearly impossible to tell the sexes apart without resorting to procedures the hippocamus would not like in the least.
Thank you. I was trying to make sure that my scanner's ability to suck the color out of anything I put in it didn't ruin this one. And it looks like it worked! ^..^
For those who have many watchers, and for those who dont have many, it is hard to know how one retains that interest as well as receive more. This article explores the basics of watchers and how we react to certain situations. Although it does not affect some deviants, and the tips are generally related to common sense, we hope the article is a worthwhile read and that the majority learn something from reading this.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.
In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
